Jimmy's Down the Street History

1955 vintage North Idaho restaurantJimmy's Down the Street has been at its current location near Downtown Coeur d'Alene, Idaho for 50+ years. It started as a small soda shop and breakfast restaurant. Through the years it transitioned into a diner and went through a number of different names and owners.

On June 18, 2012, Mike and Gretchen Surber bought Jimmy's Down The Street and have been dedicated to creating a warm, inviting atmosphere for casual breakfast & lunch dining.  While retaining many of the staff and menus from the previous owners, Mike & Gretchen have added a few 'specialties' to the menu, and their focus remains on providing great service, great food, and plentiful portions of scratch-made comfort food to tourists and locals alike.   Also, Mike & Gretchen have created a speical "Military Corner" of the restaurant to honor our nations heroes from military, law enforcement, and firefighting services.  Stop by and take a look…

Jimmy's Down The Street is noted for its Biscuits and Gravy, Chicken Fried Steak, Home-Made Corned Beef, Breakfast Scrambles, Southern Pecan Rolls, and The John Wayne & Duke Sandwiches.

Mike & Gretchen met in an A&W restaurant in Baker City, Oregon, where Gretchen was a counter girl.  Over the years, Mike's military duties took them far and wide across America, and Gretchen often waitressed to make ends meet – repeatedly becoming the lead trainer at such stops as a Perkins Restaurant in Omaha, Nebraska, the Village Inn restaurant on Route 1 in Alexandria, Virginia, and the Ft. Belvoir Officer's Club outside of Washington D.C.

Mike and Gretchen visted Coeur d'Alene in early 2012, and fell in love with the area, the people, and the way of life in beautiful Northern Idaho.  When they discovered that Jimmy's Down The Street was available for purchase, Mike and Gretchen took a leap of faith and decided to relocate from Monmouth, Oregon to Coeur d'Alene to pursue their dream of owning their own diner!
